Just a few remarks concerning this
history. I (George W. Caldwell) got some of
it through my Grandfather David Caldwell, some of
it from my parents and other aged people, some from my
Grandfather's papers. I Read John Caldwell's will
some 40 years back and that is where I got the names of
the eleven tribes of John and Millie Bandy Caldwell.
I gathered some dates from the cemetery at Mt. Ruhama
Church (in Maiden, NC). I knew Grandfather
David (Caldwell) and all his grown children -
also Willie (Billie) and family. He and Betty are
buried at Mt. Ruhama. My Grandfather and
Grandmother (David and Fannie Caldwell) and their
children are also buried there. |
|
John Caldwell married
Millie Bandy in 1803 or 1804 (from the age of their
children). My Grandfather, David Caldwell, was his
(John Caldwell's) second child. He (David
Caldwell) was born January 27 1806. John lived
on with his father (James Caldwell) for a number
of years. Then he bought a farm near Anderson
Mountain (Little Mountain). He left his son,
David, to care for his father, James Caldwell.
James gave the 100 acres to David. |

John D. Caldwell married Sallie Millie Bandy
between 1799 - 1804 in Newton, Lincoln/Catawba County, NC.
Millie was the daughter of George Bandy, Sr. and Christina Slinkard. Millie was born about
1780 in Botetourt,
Virginia. John and Millie had at least eleven children. |

We know that John and Millie Bandy Caldwell were living in
Lincoln County (now Catawba County), NC, by the time of the 1810
Census. The 1810 Census shows a John Caldwell living in
Lincoln County with 3 sons whose ages were less than 10 years
old (this could easily be David (b. 1806), William (b. 1807) and
perhaps a son whose name we do not know). This Census also
shows a son between the ages of 10 and 15 (this could easily be
eldest son Andrew since he was born about 1800). There is one
adult male between the ages of 26 to 44 (this could easily be
John D. Caldwell, whose age would have been about 35).
There are two daughters whose ages were less than 10 years old.
Daughter Anna fits into this category since she was born in
1809, but there is currently no listing for a daughter in 1810
who was less than 10 years old. Could this be a child who
died sometime shortly after 1810? The other female whose
age is between 26 and 44 would have been John's wife Millie. |
|
Just because we have no data supporting an additional son and
daughter born before 1810, this is still in all likelihood a
possibility. |
|
Living near John Caldwell were two men both named James
Caldwell. The age of the younger was between 16 and 44 and
could have easily been a brother to our John. The age of
the second James Caldwell was over 45 years old. In all
likelihood, this was our John Caldwell's father. |

The Genealogy of James Caldwell and
His Descendants

|
In the 1830 Census
record for Lincoln County (NC), John Caldwell was
50-60 years old and his wife was in the same age group.
This would place both their birth dates at between 1770
and 1780. In the 1830 (Census) they had 6
boys and 4 girls in the household. |
|
In the next Census in 1840, he and
his wife were both listed as between the ages of 60-70.
Nearby, listed as separate households, were several of
his children. Some of these were
David, Daniel, John Jr., William and Andrew. |
|
In the Lincoln County Census
Record for 1850, there was a "Milly" Caldwell age 70
living with a James Caldwell. This confirms what
Uncle George Caldwell had written. He said, "Milly
lived with her son Jim (James) after her husband John
Caldwell died between 1841 - 1845. Jim, (his)
wife, and Milly made a deed to David Caldwell for the
Home Place, the portion willed to them. John died
before his father James (Pioneer)". (This does
conflict with my prior statement that James was not
alive in 1840, or at least was not listed on the Census
records.) |

|
Additional records indicate that John D. Caldwell died 24 Nov
1838, Newton, Lincoln/Catawba
County, NC. John and Millie were buried in the cemetery of
Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden, Catawba County, NC. |

George Bandy (Sr.) was born about 1750 in Bedford County,
Virginia, the son of Richard Solomon Bandy (d. 1795) and
his wife Lucy. He married Christina Slinkard (or

1786 and he was listed on the 1790 Census in the Morgan District
of Lincoln County, NC. George signed his will on October 6, 1822
and it was probated in the October session, 1822. |
|
George and Christina had four sons and eight daughers: |
1. Milley Bandy, b. ca. 1775; m. John Caldwell
about 1799,
2. Mary (Polly) Bandy, b. ca. 1777; m. John
Johnston about 1800.
3. George Bandy, Jr., 1779-1874, m. Martha (Patsy)
Gibbs on 19 January 1819.

7. John Bandy, d. 1846; m. Christina Hollar about
1817.
8. Thomas Bandy, 1 Oct. 1784-2 July 1858; m.
Rebecca Goodson in 1809;
moved to Arkansas in 1833.
9. Catherine Bandy, b. ca. 1786; m. David Lutz
about 1820.
10. Sarah Bandy, b. ca. 1796; m. Edward Saunders on 28
June 1823.
11. Mehala Bandy, b. ca. 1798; m. Eli Lutz on 1 July
1825.
12. Susannah Bandy, b. ca. 1800;
