David Alexander Fink

Born: 06 Nov 1832, Alexander Co, NC

Died: 12 Jul 1915, Rowan Co, NC

David Alexander Fink was the second child born to Daniel Fink and Elizabeth Beaver.  Daniel was born 26 Nov 1832 in Alexander County, NC.

Church records from St. Martin's Church in Iredell County, NC give the following information:

Daniel Fink had a son born the 26th of November 1832 named Daniel Alexander who was baptized October 27, sponsor Elisabeth Fink.
The 1850 Census lists this son as Daniel A. Fink instead of Daniel Alexander Fink.  The correct name was more than likely David Alexander Fink.

The 1850 Iredell County Census shows that David Alexander was 17 years old and living at home with his parents and all of his siblings.

The 1860 Rocky Creek District Census for Iredell County shows that David Alexander was living by himself, near another David Fink (married to Susan) and that his occupation was carpenter.  The value of his Real Estate was $180 and his Personal Estate value was $130.

All four of Daniel & Elizabeth Fink's sons served the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.

Records indicate that elder son David Alexander Fink also enlisted on 18 Jun 1861.  David enlisted as a Private at the age of 28 in Company B, 2nd Calvary Regiment North Carolina.  The enlistment location was Iredell County, NC.  It seems odd, however, that David and Jacob would have enlisted on the same date, yet ended up in different Companies and Regiments.  Additional records indicate David's enlistment date was 30 Aug 1861.

By 1870, David Alexander had married Margaret Elizabeth Baker and was living in Rowan County, NC.  Margaret was born about 1842 in Rowan County, NC.  The 1870 Scotch Irish Township Census of Rowan County shows that David Alexander and Margaret had one son, Jacob Daniel Fink, who had been born in September 1868.  Their Real Estate value was $700 and Personal Estate value was $200.  Nine-year-old William Shinn was also living with the family.

David and (Margaret) Elizabeth Fink's name appeared in several issues of the Statesville Landmark - announcing an upcoming court case scheduled for Thursday, June 2, 1887.  The article shows "Elizabeth M. Fink vs. David Fink and others" - and looks as if Margaret Elizabeth was taking David to court - the reason has not be discovered at this time.

Minor Matters

Mr. D. A. Fink, of Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County, exhibited at THE LANDMARK office Monday, a growth of three ears of corn within one shuck.  The largest was about 8 inches in length and the other two 6 and 4 inches respectively.  This sort of growth has been seen often before, but the two smaller ears were clearly of a different variety of corn from the large ear.  The grain presented distinct marks of contrast.  Now, how did the two varieties of corn grow from the same stalk and under the same husk?

The 1900 Rowan County Census shows that only four of David & Margaret's children were still living on the family farm.  A niece, Minnie Benfield, was also living with the family.
